FEMA Community Rating System

This voluntary incentive program encourages communities to implement floodplain management practices. It rewards those communities that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) with lower insurance rates. Across the nation, more than 1,500 communities participate, striving to meet the three goals of the program:

  • Reduce and avoid flood damage to insurable property
  • Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the National Flood Insurance Program
  • Foster comprehensive floodplain management

You may want to contact your state floodplain manager for further information on the Community Rating System (CRS).
