The figure demonstrates that a large proportion of unusual insects are being found as the climate in Alaska warms, permitting southern species to increase their range and often bringing disease vectors that harm humans both directly and indirectly, through their impact on the wildlife residents depend on for food. Changes in weather and ice are also frequently noted. Alaska native communities are changing due to environmental impacts, climate change, and development: monitoring the environment is important for an understanding of the risks and benefits and for adaptation. The "LEOs" are the eyes, ears, and voices of environmental change in a growing number of these communities. Image credit: Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Center for Climate and Health.
