Dried lake bed on left, flooded stream on right

On the left, the water level at Lake Hartwell, a man-made reservoir bordering Georgia and South Carolina, was more than 10 feet below normal during drought in October 2012. On the right, heavy rainfall generated by Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015 caused a levee breach and flooding in Columbia, South Carolina.
