Web Soil Survey

Zoom in on a map of the United States and outline an area of interest to access a soil map and descriptions of soils for that location. Access additional information to determine the suitability of the soils for particular uses, or download data for further analysis in desktop tools.

Web Soil Survey (WSS) offers soil maps and data for more than 95 percent of counties in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The site serves as an authoritative online source of soil survey information for the nation.

There are four basic steps to using Web Soil Survey:

  1. Define your Area of Interest. Use the Area of Interest rectangle or polygon tool to define your area of interest.
  2. Click the Soil Map tab to view or print a map or access detailed descriptions of the soils in your Area of Interest.
  3. Click the Soil Data Explorer tab to access soil data for your area and determine the suitability of the soils for particular uses. To save maps or reports, add them to your shopping cart.
  4. Use the Shopping Cart to get your custom printable report immediately, or download it later.
