U.S. Sea Level Change

Data visualizations, explanations, and other resources can help coastal communities prepare for changes in their environments. By showing how sea levels are changing regionally, the site provides a foundation to inform decision-making related to coastal planning, resource management, and emergency operations.

This interagency site offers clear information in an interactive application called the National Sea Level Explorer. Users can choose coastal locations from a map or a list, and then explore multiple graphs and statements that describe how sea level has changed at that location over time. The Explorer also gives estimates for future sea level change over the next three decades. Users can listen to audio explanations or read transcripts explaining each graph; they can also download tabular data or snapshots of graphs for further analysis or inclusion in reports or presentations.

The site also offers Sea Level 101, a course with answers to questions such as What is sea level rise? How is sea level changing? and How can coastal communities plan for the future? Sea Level 101 covers the following topics:

  • Global Sea Level Rise
  • Local Sea Level Change
  • How We Measure Sea Level
  • Future Sea Level
  • Impacts of Changing Sea Level
  • What Can We Do?

The site also offers text and video to answer the question What can we do about Sea Level Rise?
